Jackson, Mississippi – The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) concluded a period of heightened awareness and enforcement during the Memorial Day weekend.  MDWFP Conservation Officers made contact with over 6,800 boaters throughout the state, ensuring safety and compliance of those enjoying Mississippi’s beautiful waterways. 

During this period, officers issued 416 total citations, addressing violations related to personal flotation devices (PFDs), boat registration, and reckless operation of a vessel. Officers made seven arrests for boating under the influence.

The total number of citations issued this Memorial Day weekend increased compared to last year, with significant rises in PFD and boat registration violations.

As summer continues and recreational activities on Mississippi’s waters increase, MDWFP reminds all boaters of critical safety requirements:

  • Every vessel must carry one wearable USCG-approved PFD, also known as a life jacket, for each person on board.
  • Ensure PFDs are in good and serviceable condition.
  • Have appropriately sized PFDs for everyone aboard the vessel.
  • Keep PFDs readily accessible in case of an emergency.

MDWFP Boating Law Administrator, Major Chris Clark, emphasizes the importance of wearing PFDs, stating, “Wearing the correct PFD is a small act that can be the difference in life and tragedy while on the water. Often times, when you need it, it is too late.”

Additionally, MDWFP strongly advises against operating vessels under the influence. Boating under the influence is not only illegal but poses significant dangers to everyone on the vessel and others on the water.
